FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
VIA Productions to produce documentary about the life and career of Gary Mule Deer
Film to include exclusive interviews with Steve Martin, Paul Shaffer, Vince Gill and more
MEMPHIS, Tenn., Oct. 18, 2017 – Memphis-based video production company VIA Productions announced today it is producing “Unrecognizably Famous,” a documentary film on legendary musician and comedian Gary Mule Deer. VIA staff members are leading all phases of production, including Bart Shannon as the director, Billie Worley as producer and Stewart Holmes as cinematographer. The film is currently in production and set to release in early 2019.
The film follows Mule Deer’s more than 50-year career as a musician-turned-comedian and features interviews with family members, close friends and fellow musicians who have shared the stage with Mule Deer. Among them are Steve Martin, his former roommate; his friends Paul Shaffer, Vince Gill and Marty Stewart; as well as Clint Eastwood and Alice Cooper.
“Gary Mule Deer is an oddball character and his illustrious journey reinforces that,” said Shannon. “I had been a fan of Gary’s growing up. However, it wasn’t until I randomly met him soon after reading a story about him in Steve Martin’s autobiography that I started thinking about the possibility of documenting his life and career. Our team at VIA decided to move forward with a film about Gary because we wanted to share his work and story with new audiences. We want people to learn about his fascinating life and show them that good guys don’t always finish last.”
“Unrecognizably Famous” highlights the highs and lows of Mule Deer’s career and captures his recent triumph back to the stage as a charismatic variety act. Throughout his flourishing career, he became roommates and close friends with Steve Martin, dated Debra Winger and turned down David Letterman for a writing job on his NBC late-night show. Today, at the age of 77, Mule Deer tours the United States, performing more than 100 shows each year.
VIA is funding all production costs for the film. “Unrecognizably Famous” is the second documentary film for VIA to fully produce in-house. Though it’s primarily known for its success in commercial production, the company has previously supported local filmmakers to fund independently made documentaries, including personal projects of VIA staff members. In addition to serving its robust roster of corporate clients, the company has plans to simultaneously grow its in-house documentary film portfolio.
